He died at 104 Collins St, East Melbourne, "aged 52".
"He trained for church, but migrated to Australia ca 1837/8 with £700. Worked first as Manager of Sheep Farm (?during 6 years in NSW), then was an extensive landed proprietor in Victoria, of Will Will Rook, Moonee Ponds and the Western district. MLC in Victoria. Left a widow with no issue - wealth to go to brother Duncan and his weakly daughters" (Ref. Dr A. Clerk diary). In fact he left nothing to Duncan, who was a trustee for his will, with bequests to various relatives and to his wife and her family.
