He was the subject of a portrait in Kenneth Macleay's "Highlanders of Scotland" (1872), commissioned by Queen Victoria and presented to him. A biography there states he was born in Meoble, son of Ewen Cameron, ferryman at Loch Lochy, and grandson of Donald Cameron b Inverailort c 1750, who was "personal servant to Charles Cameron during his exile with Prince Charles during his exile in France"
He was estate worker on the Glengarry estate, later "deer forester" (1851) and estate manager (1861) at Inverie, Glenelg, and farmer, of Mucomir farm, Kilmonivaig. "Of Moy Farm, Lochaber" at sons' marriages
