He was brother of Rev. John Cameron, Principal of Glasgow University and said to be son or either John Cameron, Minister of Dunoon or Thomas Cameron, of Glasgow, brothers of the 14th and 15th Captains of Clan Cameron.

Mackenzie gives a somewhat different early ancestry for this family, with an extra generation, viz. Rev. John Cameron of Dunoon, whose third son Thomas (of Glasgow) married Margaret Boyd. Their son Thomas married Jean Macaulay of Ardincaple, with son John, minister of Kincardine
