He was at Leod Castle, parish Fodderty, Ross & Cromarty, in 1836, then appears to have worked for some time at Beauly, parish Kilmorack, Inverness-shire before migration.
He arrived Port Phillip 24 Dec 1849, per "Andromache" from Plymouth, with his wife and six children and a Bible. Agricultural labourer, literate, Presbyterian. They initially settled at Kilmore, Vic, and later moved to Bright.
He was described by Alexander Cameron, b. 1814 (Alex36) as a cousin, and a heavy drinker who would need to stop to prosper (letter of 4 Jan 1850)
