  1. 1.  Charles Duncan Cameron was born on 12 Dec 1825 in St Georges Castle, Douglas, Isle of Man (son of Lt. Col. Allan Cameron and Aletta Jacoba Borcherds); died on 30 May 1870 in Geneva, Switzerland.

    Notes:

    He is wrongly described in National Dictionary of Biography as son of Lt Col. Charles Cameron (also of 3rd Regt) - see Fassie He entered 45th Regt as ensign 1846 and then in the 5th Regt. served on Sir Frederick Willows staff in the Crimea. Later settled in Natal, and was diplomat there and in Turkey Appointed Consul in Abyssinia 1860, imprisoned there 1864-68. He is noted to have been staying with his sister Alletta at 1861 census, positively identified by age, birthplace and position as Consul

    Notes:

    He joined the army as a volunteer Mar 1796, 53rd Regt., ("at the particular request of Sir Ralph Abercromby", Lochiel's father-in-law). He transferred to 14th Foot 1797 and a West India Regt 1798, before entering the Buffs (3rd Regt) in 1804 as a Captain. He was on half pay between 1817 and 1827, while the regiment was in Australia. He d. aged 69 (death notice).

    No relationship has been established with Lt Col Charles Cameron of the 3rd Regiment, of the Fassifern family, who died in India 1826 after leaving Australia

    Allan married Aletta Jacoba Borcherds on 22 Oct 1809 in Stellenbosch, Cape of Good Hope. Aletta was born in ca 1789 in Cape of Good Hope; died on 3 Nov 1865 in Reading, Berkshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Dau. of Rev. Meeut Borcherds and Aletta Jacoba de Wit.

    In 1861 she was in Bath, recorded as Arabella Cameron, with daughter Elizabeth "aged 36". and granddaughter Letitia, aged 21, born India.

    2. Donald Meeut Cameron was born on 12 Nov 1812 in Cape of Good Hope; died in 1854 in Jamaica .
    3. Alexander John Cameron was born on 7 Sep 1814 in Cape of Good Hope.
    4. Allan Cameron was born on 29 Mar 1817 in Ireland.
    5. Elizabeth Anne Cameron was born on 12 Nov 1822 in St Georges Castle, Douglas, Isle of Man; died on 19 Feb 1871 in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India.
