An initial family story suggested as ancestor one Alexander Cameron, known as "Black" Cameron, said to be a pirate and smuggler - this is unlikely.

By 1828 he was at Sandgate, par. All Saints, Newcastle-on-Tyne, a peddler or small ware hawker, still there in 1861
