Notes:

East India Merchant, retired in 1901. He was British Consul in Batavia, reporting on the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883.

He bought Ardsheal House, Kentallen, Appin in 1906.

Alexander married Flora McNeill on 21 Apr 1891 in London. Flora was born on 17 Mar 1861 in Edinburgh; died on 11 Apr 1932 in Duror, Argyll. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Rev Alexander Cameron was born in in Craigmagibbon; was christened on 10 Jan 1788 in Kilmodan (son of John Cameron, of Kilmodan and Elizabeth Munn); died on 30 Apr 1872 in Kilchoman, Islay.

Alexander Cameron, licenced by the Presb. of Glasgow 6 Jan 1819 & ord. by the Presby. 24 Nov same year as missionary at Tarbet, pres. to the parish of Kilchoman by George IV in July and adm. 16 Sept 1824; he got a new church built 1825. On adhering to the Protest, joining the Free Secession and signing the deed of Demission, he was declared no longer a minister of the Church 24th May 1843. His will registered 2 Jul 1872 describes him as residing at the Free Church Manse, Kilchoman

Notes:

He was recorded as John Cameron Senr, Farmer of Shelfield in 1812 (Friendly Society) and he was living at Shelfield, "aged 80" at time of 1841 census.

The Fassifern descent is apparently accepted in the family, if not proven. See Stewart, p. 217. He is presumably a natural son.

Donald Cameron was born in ca 1742 (son of John Cameron, of Fassifern and Jean Campbell); died in 1817.

Notes:

Of old 78th Regt (1757-1763), gazetted Lieut. 30 Sep 1758, retired on half pay 1763.
Capt. in 1764, died as Lieut on half pay 1817
He was at the fall of Quebec in September 1759, in Capt. Hugh Cameron's company, having arrived in Virginia from Greenock in June 1759. However he is listed as sailing with the regiment for Louisbourg (Cape Breton Island) in 1758. He was wounded at Ste-Foy, Quebec on 28 Apr 1760.

He leased Coanich (Caonich, on the northern shore of Loch Arkaig) in 1764, but was not there that year.

He was unmarried in 1764/5, when letters show he had been paying unwelcome court to the eldest daughter of one Jos. Burrell of Alnwyck (who married Ann Forster 29 Aug 1741. Mary Burrel bapt. 21 Sep 1742, Chatton, nr Alnwyck). However Lloyd's Evening Post of 23 Dec 1765 reports his marriage in Edinburgh to Miss Burrel, dau. of - Burrel of Hetton House, Northumberland. No other record of this marriage has been found. He still felt ill used by the Burrel family in 1868 (letter from Donald the Banker)

No descendants of Donald Cameron appear to be recorded in "official" family histories, but there are several families with apparently authentic claims stemming from early family tradition as detailed below. The third and fourth were probably legitimate.

A letter, written from Westfield, nr Newcastle, in July 1780 to his brother Ewen mentions (but does not name) his wife, probably Catherine.
