He apparently first came to Australia about 1859, being recorded as over 40 years in NSW at his death. However he is recorded as sailing with 2 children from Plymouth, England 9 Feb 1881 per "Zamora" and arriving Brisbane 24 May 1881 and he was a tobacconist in Glasgow at the time of his marriage, later Police constable.
