    Notes:

    He joined the Cameronians in early 1830's - soon after was Court Martialled, but found not guilty of quarreling with a fellow officer. He fought in the China wars of the 30's, and was stationed in Ireland 1847-50, Gibraltar 1850-53 and Montreal, Quebec 1853-4. He retired from the Army 1854 and during the Civil War he fought for the Confederates. He later settled in Newark, New Jersey

    Charles married Elizabeth Hare Long on 14 Oct 1847 in Shronell, Tipperary, Ireland. Elizabeth (daughter of Edward Thomas Long and Mary Crozier Clarke) was born on 8 Nov 1825 in Tipperary, Co.     Notes:

    He raised a regiment of highlanders in 1799. He began the building of the new Achnacarry in 1802, but did not complete it.

    Notes:

    Donald Cameron, 22nd Lochiel, and his wife separated and he later had a second family by the former governess, Elizabeth Goff, daughter of an Army sergeant. They stayed together until he died in 1832, and she is always referred to as Mrs Cameron, although no evidence has been found of a divorce, or of a second marriage (a marriage in Newcastle Cathedral has been mentioned in their family).

    As can be seen by the birth places of their children, Donald and Elizabeth lived at Tynemouth, Northumberland, for some years, then Yorkshire and Surrey before moving to France. They lived for some of the time at least at Agen in France and the boys were educated at Soreze, in SW France. Lochiel was on his way to fetch them from school when he was taken ill and died at Toulouse.

    In 1861 she was living at Mt Pleasant, Liverpool with her son John and daughter Ann Martha.

    She was probably bapt. 14 Apr 1784, Richmond, Surrey, dau. of Samuel Goff and Sarah

  1. 8.  Charles Cameron, 21st Lochiel was born in ca 1747/8 in Lochaber (or France) (son of Donald Cameron, 19th Lochiel and Anne Campbell); died on 31 Aug 1776 in place uncertain.

    Notes:

    Episcopalian. Grew up in France and succeeded in 1762 on brother's death, aged about 15. Ensign and later Captain in 30th Foot (General Parsloe's Regiment) - Commission 26th June, 1765, bought for £400. He transferred to 71st Fraser Highlanders in 1775 and raised a company, but died before leaving for America. He had a lease of Glendessary portion of Annexed estate.

    In 1770 he was described by Charles Cameron of Worcester (b. Jul 1748) as "a few months older than I am". (Celtic Monthly Mar 1903)

    Charles married Martha Marshall on 1 Nov 1767 in Gibraltar. Martha was born in ca 1741; died on 13 May 1816 in Berwick upon Tweed; was buried on 18 May 1816 in Berwick upon Tweed. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Daughter of Robert Marshall, Quartermaster of the 30th Foot, and Ester ... . She was living at Cobham Mount, Kent with her daughter Ann in 1791. She received a widow's pension from 1777 to at least 1811(WO 25 3092, 3045). She died at Palace St, Berwick.

    Some facts (and deductions) about Robert Marshall: He was born ca. 1710-16, died 1786. Joined the Army 1732-34 and served 52 to 54 years. He was Quartermaster of 30th Regiment from 8 Sep 1761 to 24 Jan 1773, then Ensign in Independent Company of Invalids at Tilbury Fort from 25 Jan 1773 to 1776. He was at Dover Castle 1777-86, and does not appear in the Army List of 1789.

    Other children were: 1. John Marshall, b. ca 1744. Quartermaster after his father in 30th Foot, from 25 Jan 1773 He died ca 1785-90, after 28 years of service; 2. Mary Marshall, m. ... Collett, a marine; 3. Paul Marshall, Captain in the Royal Marines. He was wounded, and died on the retired list after 27 years of service.

    Dates for their children below come from a Bible printed Glasgow 1771, owned by Charles and Martha Cameron, given to their daughter Anne and passed down in the Forster family
