Ewen Cameron

1836 -

Generations:      Standard    |    Vertical    |    Compact    |    Box    |    Text    |    Ahnentafel    |    Fan Chart    |    Media    |    PDF

Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Ewen Cameron was born in ca 1836 (child of Donald Cameron and Catherine McPherson).

    Other Events:

    • Immigration ship: Brilliant
    • Immigration: 1838

    Notes:

He does not appear to have arrived 1838 on "Brilliant" with his family. Ewen was recorded on Donald's death certificate in 1867, aged 31, but is not mentioned on Catherine's certificate in 1903 (when 2 females were said to be dead, presumably Anne, above and possibly a mistake for him) He may be the Ewen, son of Donald baptized Acharacle 19 Mar 1838, coming later with another family member. Or the name may be a mistake for Hughann. This is consistent with mention of a daughter aged 13 in a school petition of 1849

    Immigration:
    arrived 1838 on "Brilliant"

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Donald Cameron was born in ca 1777 in Ardnamurchan, Argyllshire (son of Alexander Cameron and Mary Cameron); died on 12 May 1867 in Waterhole Reach, Port Stephens, NSW; was buried in Stroud, NSW.

    Other Events:

    • Immigration ship: Brilliant

    Notes:

Records regarding the early generations of this family contain a number of conflicting details. Some of the facts recorded in the several accounts of the family are not backed up by primary documentation, rather representing oral tradition, which is known to often get distorted. The order and detail of Donald Cameron's children given below represent my best guess, having given consideration to the merits of conflicting documents. RSC

This family has reason to accept a connection with the Dungallon family, but the details have yet to be discovered. Donald is said to have called Jean Cameron (who was wife of Dr Archibald Cameron) "Aunt".

"Dungallon" was certainly used as a house name, and stud animal name, in the later family.

One reading is that "Aunt" Jean Cameron was in fact a first cousin once removed of Donald, who was grandson of Donald or Ewen Cameron of Camusaine, (half) brothers of Archibald Cameron of Dungallon (father of the standard bearer) - ref. Alf Wood

A further possibility is that descent is from Donald Cameron, natural son of Alexander, 3rd of Dungallon. If so, then on dates Donald (of Australia) would be grandson of this Donald, either through Alexander or Mary Cameron.

    Immigration:
    emigrated on "Brilliant"

    Died:
    "aged 88"

Donald married Catherine McPherson in 1836 in Ardtoe. Catherine was born on 25 Dec 1807 in Tobermory; died on 30 Apr 1903; was buried in Stroud, NSW. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

She had a daughter, Anne McPherson, b. ca 1832, who came with the family on the "Brilliant".

Anne married 17 Mar 1855, Sydney, John Renwick, of "Glen Thorne", Manning River, NSW, with issue of 2 daughters, 6 sons. She d. 18 Aug 1881, bur. Stroud, "aged 46", dau. of Alexander and Catherine.
