CLAN GATHERING

In pursuance of advertistment in the Argus’ newspaper, calling a meeting of the Clan Cameron who now form, in this colony a numerous body, on the evening of the 16th instant, a large number of the clan and its branches assembled in a room appropriated for the occasion at the Robert Burns Hotel.

A Piper being in attendance, “Wild and High the Camerons’ Gathering rose -The War-note of Lochele” D Cameron, Esq, Blackheath, being unanimously called to the chair in an appropriate address explained the object of the meeting after which it was:

I. Moved by Mr George Gordon Cameron, Glenroy and seconded by Mr John Cameron, Deep Creek and carried unanimously.

That, owing to the great number of persons of the name of Cameron now in this colony itis desirable that they should form themselves into a society to be called ‘The Clan Cameron Society ‘

II.  Moved by Mr Donald Cameron Stoney Field, and seconded by Mr Donald Cameron, Fiery Creek.

That the objects of the Society shall be first to establish by annual subscription among its members, a fund applicable to the relief and aid of such widows, orphans and others of the name, as may be placed in circumstances to require and merit such aid. And secondly To promote those feelings of socialbility and mutual good will that should prevail among the members of the clan who are placed at such a distance from their native hills.

III Moved by Mr D C Cameron Melbourne and seconded by Mr Alexander Cameron, Melbourne and carried unanimously –

That as it is desirable that the Society should embrace as great a number of members as possible persons of the name of MacPhee and MacMillan, (who are acknowledged as branches of the clan ) and also all persons (of whatever name) who may be related to the Clan Cameron, in the first degree of consanguinity, or by matrimonial alliance, shall be eligible as members.

IV Moved by Mr Hugh Macphee, and seconded by Mr Donald Cameron, Bryan’s Creek and carried unanimously.

That the amount of each subscription to the funds of the Society, should be for the first year not less than £5. Subscribers to the amount of £ 10 and upwards to be entitled to a double vote at the meetings of the Society.

V Moved by Mr R Livingston, Melbourne and seconded by Mr Ewen Cameron, Melbourne and carried unanimously.

That the affairs of the Society shall be managed by a committee of six members, beside the Secretary for the time being who shall be ex officio a member of Committee three to be a quorum.

VI Moved by Mr Allan Cameron, and seconded by Mr Angus Cameron, and carried unanimously –

That the ordinary meetings of the Society shall be held half yearly and at the first, half yearly meeting one half the members of the Committee shall retire from office by lot, the meeting at which they retire, electing few members in their room , and at every subsequent meeting, the half of the Committee retiring shall do so by rotation. Such elections to be made by ballot and the retiring members to be eligible for re-election.

VII Moved by Mr. Donald Cameron Ballarat and seconded by Mr. Hugh Macphee, Melbourne and carried unanimously.

That so soon as the funds of the society are in such a condition as to warrant the purchase or renting of promises, or other property, to be used as a Club House Library, or otherwise, for the convenience of the members, or for the purpose of an investment for the benefit of the Society, the Committee shall be fully empowered to act in respect of the same in such manner as may seem to them best.

VIII Moved by Mr D C Cameron, and seconded by Mr Alexander Cameron, and carried unanimously.

That a subscription List be now opened.

IX Moved by Mr Donald Cameron, Bryan’s Creek, and seconded by Mr. Alexander Cameron and carried unanimously.

That the following gentlemen be elected members of Committee namely –

Donald Kennedy, Esq , of Glenroy, President, Alexander Cameron Esq , Melbourne do, Alexander Cameron Esq , do, Ewen Cameron Esq, do, George Gordon Cameron Esq, Glenroy, Duncan Cameron Esq, Merri Creek.

X Moved by Mr Donald Cameron, Stoneyfield and seconded by Mr John Cameron, Deep Creek, and carried unanimously –

That the Committee shall be empowered to frame such rules for the government of the society, in the spirit of these resolutions, as may to them appeal best suited for that purpose.

XI Moved by Mr George Gordon Cameron and seconded by Mr Donald Cameron, Fiery Creek, and carried unanimously,

That Mr. D C Cameron be appointed Secretary to the Society.

XII Moved by Mr. Donald Cameron Ballarat and seconded by Mr R Livingston, and carried unanimously.

That Mr John Cameron Melbourne, be appointed Treasurer

XIII Moved by Mr George Gordon Cameron and seconded by Mr John Cameron Deep Creek and carried unanimously.

That throughout the country districts of the Colony, Sub Committees of two or more members shall be appointed for the purpose of obtaining subscriptions and otherwise promoting the objects of the Society in their respective localities, under the control of the Central Committee.

XIV Moved by Mr Donald Cameron, and seconded by Mr Donald Cameron, Bryan’s Creek and carried unanimously.

That in addition to the ordinary half-yearly meetings of the Society, the Committee shall be empowered to call extraordinary meetings by advertisement.

XV Moved by Mr Alexander Cameron Melbourne, and seconded by Mr John Cameron, Deep Creek and carried unanimously.

That the following gentlemen be appointed members of the sub-committees in the country districts, the Secretary to communicate with them, requesting their co operation, viz :

XVII Moved by Mr George Gordon Cameron, and seconded by Mr John Cameron and carried unanimously.

That the thanks of this meeting be expressed to Mr Daniel Cameron for his efficient conduct in the chair.

The subscription amounted to upwards of £200

 

Public Meetings

CLAN Gathering – A meeting of the Clan Cameron Society is appointed to be held at the Robert Burns Hotel, on the evening of Monday, the 5th September, at half past 7 o’clock. As d\several questions of importance to the interests and usefulness of the Society are to be discussed at the proposed meeting the committee express a hope that there will be a strong muster of the members already enrolled. Such members of the Clan and its  branches, (the McMillans and McPhees) as have not yet joined the society, are also invited to attend the proposed meeting, in order that they may have an opportunity of becoming informed as to the nature and objects of the institution.

CLAN CAMERON. (NSW)

The first gathering of the Clan Cameron (N.S.W.) will be held in the New Dungowan on Friday, June 24, to coincide with a great rally of members of the Clan from all parts of the world at Achnacarry, Scotland. Chieftain of the Clan in Australia, Sir Donald Cameron, will be present at the gathering in Sydney.
